Hey readers, Another week another excerpt from our odd little life. Nobody tells you that house and pet sitting turns you into a highly-trained operative in the most bizarrely specific skills. Forget degrees, doctorates, or certifications, this lifestyle is its own type of university. Here are just a few of the “talents” we’ve accidentally mastered over the years: 👃 The pee sniff. We can now detect dog wee on a rug from the next room. It’s like wine tasting, but with carpets. (“Hmm, earthy notes… with a hint of Cockapoo.”) 🔧 Appliance whispering. From coaxing a 1980s washing machine into spinning, to hacking a German oven with hieroglyphic buttons, we’ve unlocked the secret languages of household tech. 🥘 Extreme kitchen improvisation. Can we make dinner with one saucepan, a cheese grater shaped like a hedgehog, and a fork that bends in the middle? Yes. Yes, we can. 🛋️ Furniture tetris. We’ve become pros at arranging our belongings alongside dog beds, litter trays, and hamster cages in rooms that already resemble a very small IKEA showroom. (Bonus points for avoiding trip hazards at 3am) 🚪 Door lock olympics. We can now open 47 varieties of front door - from stiff Victorian keys that need two hands and a prayer, to high-tech keypads that beep like you’ve just hacked into MI6. 🐾 Pet psychology. We’ve learned to decode the full spectrum of stares: from “feed me” to “why are you in my house?” to “I’m about to puke on the carpet”. This lifestyle is like developing a secret superhero skillset nobody asked for, but now we couldn’t live without. 👉 Your turn: What random skill have you picked up from a job, house, or pet?
